GRAND AVENUE NEWS HOSTS ITS FIRST BLOCK PARTY—

Connecting the Community Online and in Person

Coral Gables, FL—Grandavenews.com is gearing up for its first Coconut Grove Block Party to bring the community together and celebrate the launch of the website. The party lasts from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Elizabeth Virrick Park, 3255 Plaza St. in the Grove.

“While the idea is to introduce residents to their community online, it’s also a great opportunity for our staff to meet potential readers,” says Kim Grinfeder, director of Grand Avenue News and assistant professor in the University of Miami School of Communication.

“We want to put residents in the driver’s seat of grandavenews.com – this is a website for community news and events, and who better to suggest ideas for stories and to submit such content themselves than the folks who live there?”

Party-goers will have the opportunity to listen to speakers including community residents and Tsisti Wakhisi, School of Communication professor whose graduate students write about the community for grandavenews.com.

There will be free food and live music from local hip-hop jazz band Creative Minds. A raffle will be open only to attendees; prizes include gift certificates to local businesses, jewelry, movie tickets, beauty products, gift baskets and more.

Grinfeder also will lead demonstrations of the website so residents can learn more about it.

“We hope people will bring their family and friends,” he says. “We’re all looking forward to a good time!”
