Joyce, I understand how upset you are and I really enjoyed reading how you feel. After all this is what the community website was made for. I feel angry and worried everyday when I see Grand Avenue. Because what it once was is just a patch of grass to some like AO, To me even though I maybe white and live on the other side of McDonald Avenue. I am angry too! For AO who has only lived in Coconut Grove for 3 months, she has not see what you and have seen. She hasn't seen the homes of generations torn down and the streets ripped up. My name is Camille DePhillips and I am a 5th generation of Coconut Grove. The people of the Grove have to come together and ask questions. The Police here are not what they once were. It upsets me they harrassed you while doing your job. When I see a cop these days I feel more afraid then safe.

I am sorry, but the entire second half of your article is pure racist drivel. It really is. "They" want to take over? "They are trying to take over our schools"? "The Whites and the Cubans call the police"? "The Cubans fly through stop signs"? If I were to write the article and substituted "the blacks" in place of "the Cubans"... would you be upset? Would you not accuse me (and rightly) of being racist? You want to be taken seriously? Show the same respect to others as you would like to be shown to you.

This is a very interesting story. But do you mind me asking, how do you know they're "Cuban"? Aren't you jumping into conclusions? I'm Cuban and you would never guess it, because I'm probably closer to your skin color. I just moved to the Grove three months ago so I don't have the insight you have. But in the building I live in (67-unit), I would say it's pretty mixed. Yes there are blacks as well. And I live pretty close to the fire station. Also, I think some people wouldn't refer to it as "kicking out black people." I think the Grove is trying to improve its overall quality. If you take South Beach, Coral Gables, Brickell, the same thing is happening. It's not about "kicking out black people." If the place is good, property value goes up. And if you can't afford it, it doesn't matter if you're black, White, Cuban, Haitian: you'll have to move. And compared to the other places I mentioend, I'd say the Grove has the most socio-economic mix.
