The Coconut Grove Sailing Club is providing 15 sailing scholarships during the week of July 26 through August 6th. The scholarship acceptance is based on the first 15 applications received which meet all criteria. A swimming test will be required on the first day of camp.
The Summer Youth Sailing Instruction Camp is for both sailing Club Members and Non-Members. Student Sailors will be classified as either Beginner, Intermediate, or Racing Level. A US Sailing Certified Instructor and several Junior Instructors supervise the classes. Campers must be between the ages of seven to fourteen years old. Camp will begin weekdays at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm each day and will be held rain or shine.
What will my child learn? Beginners will learn basic sailing skills, knots, nomenclature, and safety. By the end of the course, beginning sailors will be able to single-hand a pram boat, know the names of all parts of the boat, and know what to do if the boat capsizes. Intermediate sailors will learn more advanced techniques, racing rules, and explore further into Biscayne Bay
Boats – Campers will be sailing in our Club Prams, Optimist, Sunfish and Flying Scots. These are single-handed and double- handed boats used for pleasure sailing as well as competition. Sailing small boats is an incredible way to learn sailing, teaching students independence and creating a stronger, more individual character while learning a new sport and building camaraderie with fellow sailors. Most important, being responsible for your own boat teaches lessons that stay with kids forever.
Life jackets – All Summer Sailing Campers must bring their own Type 3 Coast Guard approved life jacket. Life jackets will be worn at all times. Parents are encouraged to provide a comfortable life jacket that fits well the duration of sailing and dock exposure.
Clothing, lunches, and water – Campers should wear bathing suits each day under their clothing. Don’t forget the sunscreen, hats, and towels. Campers should bring their own lunch each day; water bottles are essential. Be sure you bring sunscreen, water shoes, refillable water water, lunch, Type 3 personal Floatation Device, towel, and change of clothes.
How to Register – West Grove Applicants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis, as are all campers. To participate please make sure to fill out these forms drop them off at the Sailing Club :
