The nonprofit, Breakthrough Miami, won $200,000 from Bank of America to continue its work toward encouraging needy middle school students to enter top prep high schools and then graduate from college. Breakthrough Miami was among two organizations selected to receive the Neighborhood Builder Award from the bank. An awards breakfast was held at the Freedom Tower to honor Breakthrough Miami and other winners.
In recognition of the group’s commitment and leadership in Miami, Breakthrough Miami received $200,000 of unrestricted funding over the next two years and the opportunity to participate in a strategic leadership development program.
Breakthrough Miami was founded in 1991. Its mission is to place highly motivated students with limited educational opportunities on the path to college. The program wants to prepare and encourage talented, motivated middle school students to enter and thrive in top college preparatory high school programs and then graduate from college. The nonprofit also promote careers in education for outstanding high school and college students who teach, tutor and mentor in Breakthrough Miami’s school year program and summer institute.
This summer Breakthrough Miami served 550 students from all over Miami-Dade at five sites, including Ransom Everglades School, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, the Cushman School, Doctors Charter School and College Bound at Coral Gables Senior High. The program plans to expand its reach to serve an additional 200 students. Breakthrough Miami graduates 100 percent of the students retained in their program. The staff, donors and volunteers believe strongly that children should and can graduate from high school and enter a four-year college.
