The dueling pianos at Cocowalk have gone silent.

Crazy Pianos, the popular bar and restaurant, sent out a notice to the public on Monday thanking the clientele for their support and inviting them to its farewell celebration that evening.

Cocowalk’s marketing manager Naomi Evans said the closure was not Crazy Piano’s decision.

“The landlord wanted to upgrade to a more upscale entertainment tenant,” she said.

Part of a chain based in Holland, Cocowalk’s Crazy Pianos was the first in the United States. It opened in May 2009

The establishment had become a popular stop on the nightly bar crawls, largely because its live piano duels set it apart from all other places in the Grove. Some of its regulars were surprised by the decision to shut its doors.

“Every time I’ve come to the Grove for the night life scene, Crazy Pianos has been completely packed,” said Christine Mirabal, a student at Miami Dade College. “It seemed to be doing so well”

Florida International student Alexandra Weisz said she had always thought of Crazy Pianos as “a really cool place.”

“A lot of other people agree in my opinion, considering I could barely breathe from the huge crowd stuffed in there every time I went,” she said.

A Hollywood, Calif., based restaurant and nightlife company, The Dolce Group, will be opening “The Burgundy Room” next month at the Crazy Pianos location, Evans said in an email. “The Burgundy Room” will be an upscale martini bar that will combine the dueling pianos concept originated by Crazy Pianos with sporting events on flat screen TVs, and California-style cuisine.
