West Grove’s “The Cookie Lady” makes sandwiches too

BY SANDY FLOREZ

“The Cookie Lady” may be best known for satisfying West Grove’s sweet tooth, but Carrie Jackson offers more on her menu than 5-inch chocolate chip and sprinkled cookies.

In fact, her double-stacked turkey club sandwiches often leave her customers without enough room for dessert.

When Jackson, who says she has been baking for as long as she can remember, first opened The Gourmet Cookie Café in 2006, the shop offered only baked goods – everything from cakes, to cookies to brownies. Although kids hardly objected to the colorful assortment of options with sprinkles and icing in hues of blues, pinks, reds, and purples, grown-ups began asking, “Where’s the food?”

So, by popular demand, Jackson began adding lunch items to her menu.

“It just took off,” she said.

Although the corner shop at 3701 Grand Ave. may be small, many of Jackson’s customers take a seat in one of the three tables she has set up and enjoy their lunch hour with a relaxing meal. Jackson says the most popular lunch item to date is the turkey club. Each layer of sliced turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and mustard is neatly stacked between three pieces of bread – customers choose between white or wheat. It’s just a dent in the pocket: $4.95.

Jackson says even her younger clients – many of whom are students at Ponce De Leon Middle School and Coconut Grove Elementary – have become fans of the lunch menu.

When business began to pick up, Jackson invested in a commercial sandwich prep table, a la Subway, to ensure freshness and efficiency.

“I didn’t want to spread myself too thin,” Jackson said. “So while I’m in the other room baking, and I get an order for a sandwich, other employees can easily find and prepare the sandwich.”

Jackson’s foremost passion remains baking, but she has her rules regarding her sweeter products. She always asks her “little customers” if they’ve eaten breakfast or dinner before she sells them a cookie.

If they say no, Jackson’s got them covered. After all, kids can enjoy a good sandwich too.
