Why are you called Grand Ave News?
Grand Avenue is a main road that runs through Coconut Grove. It is an essential part of the community, so we decided to name ourselves after it. As Coconut Grove’s central street, Grand Avenue passes through the west and connects to other areas of the neighborhood. Grand Ave. ties Coconut Grove together—which is what we aim to do with our news coverage.
What do you cover?
Grand Ave News covers topics ranging from the arts to education to the neighborhood’s crime rate—and everything in between. By working closely with residents in the community, we are able to pinpoint their interests and deliver news that is of the utmost importance to them.
Where can I read your stories?
Our stories run on website at: http://grandavenews.com; on the homepage of The Miami Herald at MiamiHerald.com or in the “Neighbors” section of the print edition of The Miami Herald. We also have a yearly print edition of Grand Avenue News.
What’s your relationship with the University of Miami?
Grand Ave News works closely with the University of Miami School of Communication. The production of Grand Ave News is integrated into the curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The visual journalism, journalism, advertising, and broadcasting classes work together to make this paper a reality.
What’s your relationship with The Miami Herald?
The Herald is a partner of ours. We cover the Coconut Grove community, and The Herald often chooses stories we cover to run on their website as well. We share our content and get our name out there by working side-by-side with The Herald.
How do you work with the community?
Grand Ave News works in collaboration with Coconut Grove residents, schools and businesses in gathering ideas, promoting events, and encouraging community submissions. Grand Ave News takes the interests of the community very seriously and focuses on the community’s need for information.
In addition to giving news tips, how can I help?

I just submitted a tip, photo or suggestion for an article, now what?
Thanks! We will review your submission and make sure its relevant to what we’re doing as a news site. Then we’ll follow-up on the lead you’ve given us, or add your photo to our “Community uploads” archive located on The Shutter page. Keep an eye out for news!
Will you really be independent and unbiased?
Absolutely. Grand Ave News works with the University of Miami’s School of Communication; students in the journalism program are taught and constantly reminded of the high ethical and moral standards required to report news.

What’s the point of hyper-local news?
Hyper-local news is news that targets a specific community. By having a hyper-local news site, we are able to produce news that is of most interest to Coconut Grove. Grove Ave News’ small size allows us to work more closely with the community and accept submissions from our readers.
What type of organization are you?
We are non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that started early in 2009. The site started out as a project headed by the University of Miami School of Communication. Since then, we have grown into a local news site with increased coverage that, we hope, is here to stay.
